2009 Water Wise Gardening Classes

Maintaining and creating healthy landscapes can save both water and money. Some of a homeowner’s largest investments are in their landscape, and generally more than 50% of annual residential water use is for landscape irrigation.

Classes are held at the District office and water-wise garden, 6800 Nimbus Road. Classes are free to Left Hand District customers, although there are materials charges in some cases. Space is limited, so reservations are required. Please notify us ASAP if you are unable to attend, as classes are in high demand and we generally have a waiting list.  Registration Form (PDF)

Making a Container Garden        Class is FULL         Saturday, May 16th
by: Joan Sapp      We will keep names on a waiting list.  10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Containers are a great way to add drama to an existing garden, to accommodate a plant that requires specialized soil, or introduce living material to a patio or balcony. Plants in pots may be the only way for some of us to have a garden! We will explore design considerations, types and numbers of plants to use, acceptable containers, soil mixes, and fertilization. Container gardening is a great way to determine actual water use and stay within a water budget. Registration Form (PDF)

Bring your own flexible plastic container (dish pan, chip bowl) to use as a mold, wear old clothes and bring some plastic gloves. There is a materials charge of $10 for supplies. Registration Form (PDF)

Creating a Garden Landscape with Rock Gardens    Saturday June 6th
by: Jerry Vaughn                                                         10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Properly designed and maintained rock gardens can be beautiful and a great way to conserve precious water resources. For many, creating a rock garden can be a daunting experience. There are, however, important guidelines which increase one’s chances for success – placement of the rock gardens, kinds of rock gardens, rock garden media, boulder choices and placement, mulches and plant requirements. Examples shown during class will be from Mr. Vaughn’s present garden landscape (with over 400 varieties of plants) which has been on many garden tours over the 8 years of its existence. Xeriscape guidelines were followed wherever possible, in fact, there is no irrigation system for the 10,000 square foot garden. Registration Form (PDF)
